The program of the workshop can be found here. The proceedings of the workshop have been published in volume 4102 in Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.

Topic

Process design is the conscious evaluation and organization of the tasks that a business process is composed of. Process design is typically driven by the desire for increased process performance (e.g. increased customer satisfaction, accelerated process execution) or the requirement for process conformance (e.g. ISO, ITIL, Sarbanes-Oxley). In contemporary process designs, IT often plays a great part as a means to automate parts of the process and to facilitate the process execution and monitoring.

Aim

Despite widespread industrial efforts spent on process design and its considerable pay-offs, the subject is treated by many as an art rather than a science. While researchers in the BPM field have traditionally focused more on the techniques to specify processes (process modeling), the subject of process design is attracting more and more interest. The BPD workshop is organized as a forum to present and discuss rigorous and innovative approaches on this topic.

Audience

The intended audience of the workshop consists of both BPM researchers and practitioners who have an interest in advancing the state of the art in process design (as in contrast to mere process modeling). The first edition of this workshop was organized in conjunction with BPM '05 in Nancy. It attracted 19 submissions, of which 8 papers were selected to be presented during the one-day workshop.

Workshop topics

Topics of the workshop include but are not limited to:

Format of the workshop and publication

The workshop will primarily consist of presentations of the accepted papers and additional key-note speakers. Papers should be submitted in advance and will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. All accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. At least one author for each accepted paper should register for the workshop and plan to present the paper. Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit a paper for a special issue of the International Journal of Business Process Integration and Management.

Paper Submission

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for presentation in any of the areas listed above. Only papers in English will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 8 pages. Papers should be formatted in LNCS format (see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for details). The title page must contain a short abstract, a classification of the topics covered, preferably using the list of topics above, and an indication of the submission category (regular paper/industry paper). Papers should be submitted electronically via the BPD'06 paper submission system. Please upload a self-contained PostScript file or PDF file. All submissions must be received no later than May 3, 2006 (passed).
